Most closing issues are safety related.
Modern garage doors are designed to stop or reverse when they detect a potential safety issue.
Because of this, many garage doors that won’t close are actually responding exactly as intended.
Sensor alignment issues, obstructions, dirty safety beams and opener settings account for many of the problems we see.
Four quick checks.
Safety Sensors
Make sure nothing is blocking the safety beams near the floor.
Obstructions
Check for objects, debris or stored items interfering with the door.
Remote Controls
Rule out accidental button presses or control issues.
Power
Confirm the opener system has power and is operating normally.
What we see most often.
The most common causes behind a garage door that won’t close properly.
Sensor Alignment Issue
One of the most common causes of a door reversing during closing.
Dirty Safety Beams
Dust, cobwebs and debris can interrupt the beam.
Track Obstruction
Objects preventing safe travel.
Limit Setting Issue
The opener incorrectly thinks the door has reached an obstruction.
Motor or Opener Fault
Less common but possible.
Damaged Door Components
Tracks, rollers or hardware affecting movement.

When to stop troubleshooting.
If the garage door appears off its tracks, has damaged cables, bent hardware or repeated reversing issues that don’t have an obvious cause, stop operating it and have the system inspected.
Safety systems are designed to prevent injury and property damage. Repeatedly forcing a door closed can create larger problems.
“If a door keeps reversing and you can’t find an obvious obstruction, stop using it and give us a call. Forcing a door closed against its safety system never ends well.“
